Our spotlight for May is registered nurse, author, and entrepreneur Santisha Walker MSN, RN, CWC. Check out her story!
1.)How long have you been a nurse?
I have been a Registered Nurse for 4 years.
2.)Why did you decide to become a nurse? During my undergraduate years as a business major, my interest peaked in the nursing field as I interacted with nursing students on campus; but I decided to proceed with obtaining my business degree due to being only 1.5 years away from graduating. While working for 5 years as an insurance agent in the role of healthcare benefits advisor, I yearned to have a more direct impact on the health and personal lives of others; therefore, I decided to pursue my previous desire during my undergraduate years of becoming a nurse. I am thankful I followed my true desire, as it has offered much joy and fulfillment.
3.)Tell us about your company, how you are connecting the community and healthcare, and how your business can help healthcare professionals.
I own and operate Walker Group Health & Wellness, which is the health sector of Walker Group The Consultants, LLC. We are a boutique consulting company that provides tailored services specializing and health & wellness education. We believe in offering companies, groups, and organizations access to effective, quality and practical health & wellness-related knowledge to aid their group in functioning at its highest level. My company provides a platform for licensed, certified and experienced health & wellness professionals to partner with our vision of providing life-changing education via presentations, seminars and workshops to enhance our client's overall health, wellness and performance.
I connect the community and healthcare by working with local companies to implement wellness education and assist in increasing their employee’s health, which in turn increases the company’s morale and positively impacts the company’s financial bottom line. Walker Group Health & Wellness has partnered with the American Nurses Association for the “Health Nurse Healthy Nation Initiative” to empower nurses to lead a healthy lifestyle, so our communities and the entire nation can follow suit. I believe nurses are the crux of healthcare; therefore, our total wellness is vital to the level of care provided to patients, our family, the community and the overall healthcare system.
I also operate a personal brand, “The Nurse Brandnista”, in which I serve as a coach for nurses desiring to move beyond the traditional realm of nursing to building a thriving brand! I catapult nurses into living out their heart’s desires while simultaneously making their own mark within the nursing profession.
4.)What are your passions outside of nursing? I adore spending quality time with my best friend and husband of 10 years. I enjoy traveling, and passionate about meeting new people and thinking outside of the box. I also appreciate spending time with my large family. I am passionate about experiencing the fullness of life and enjoying life’s little and intimate moments.
5.)Where do you see yourself, within the nursing profession, in 5 years? I see myself continuing to strategically grow Walker Group Health & Wellness as a powerhouse in health & wellness education for groups. Also, I see myself authoring additional books, in addition to the two I’ve previously authored entitled, “Black Girls Hear” and “Stethoscope and A DREAM: A Victorious Nurse Anthology”. I also envision myself continuing to be a beacon of light for others desiring to live a balanced life!
6.) What are you most proud of/biggest accomplishment(s)? My proudest accomplishment is completing nursing school and becoming an RN. I did not find out until after I decided to pursue nursing that my paternal grandmother, who I never had the pleasure of meeting, was an LPN aspiring to become an RN. I feel as if I fulfilled her dream and continued her legacy of being a caretaker. My biggest accomplishment has been starting my company and obtaining my MSN in Nursing Administration, while maintaining the balances of life. With much prayer, consistency and passion I have been able to achieve my life’s goals up to this point and for that I am grateful!
7.) If you were not a nurse what would your career be? I believe I would be a motivational speaker. I’ve developed into someone who truly enjoys empowering others to be their best self. Having RN behind my name opens many doors in the healthcare arena, but the core of me simply desires to motivate, empower and inspire!
